Introducing…The Vibe Filter

A playlist was meant to be an easier way for you to listen to what you want. The perfect playlist has an underlying synergy that synthesizes, accentuates, and fuses different tracks into seamless cohesion. But over years and years of collecting new songs, our playlists start collecting debris. We mindlessly add new tracks, starting and abandoning dozens of playlists, playing the frustrated curator, while our playlists become muddled and bloated.

To solve this problem, we are introducing the Vibe Filter. The Vibe Filter is the next evolution of the playlist experience. Instead of curating dozens of playlists for specific moods, you can simply pick the vibe that you’re feeling within a playlist. Choose freely between: Lazy, Relax, Chill, Party and Rave. The Lazy Vibe Filter picks out the lowest energy songs in your playlist so you can sunbathe, spread-eagled, on your verandah. But if you’re looking to enjoy a high-octane dance party with your socially distanced friends, simply choose to Rave, and get ready for some hip-shaking fun.

What a ‘Lazy’ Filter feels like

Your Liked Songs are likely to be a mountain of assorted songs from all genres and random places, from exhilarating Tech House tracks to chill RnB bops. With your Vibe Filter, all you need to do is pick your vibe and find a soundtrack that matches you seamlessly.

We put the Vibe Filter to the test with some particularly bloated playlists, made by yours truly — the author and one of Mixonset’s co-founders, Boris.

Filtering 702 Liked Songs into 127 Chill Songs

My 702 Liked Songs would take around 35 hours to listen to on Spotify. By applying Mixonset’s ‘Chill’ filter, the 127 songs remaining became much more manageable, taking a slick 3 hours to listen to if you just listen to the Best Parts of every song (we do that professional DJ work by playing the 1–2 minute highlights for you as well). I was left with a fun mix perfect for a work from home session with Jacob Collier, Gramatik, Esperanza Spalding, and Young the Giant.

Filtering Multiple Vibes

Afterwards, I tried the Vibe Filter again with another cluttered playlist I’ve made called “Lost and Found”, where I dump all my Shazamed songs in. The 108 songs in the playlist have no cohesion: they’re from different genres, different countries, and so, so random. This time, I used the ‘Party’ and ‘Rave’ Vibe Filter for the playlist, taking only the 45 most high-energy songs. It became a kaleidoscopic mix of influences (Duckwrth, Maribou State, Manu Dibango, Mandar) from different genres that all matched the intensity of my afternoon run. What would have taken more than 7 hours to listen to front-to-back on Spotify became a hyper-curated mix of my favorite songs with a playtime of a few seconds shy of an hour, perfect for my cardio workout.

Lots of listeners have reached out to us asking for a way to make playlist creation better and easier. And finally, we have a new and innovative way to listen to just the tracks in your playlist that fit into certain vibes. Just filter, sit back, and vibe to music that matches you.
